A vulnerability was found in phpMyAdmin up to 4.6.4/4.4.15.8/4.0.10.17 (Database Administration Software). It has been rated as critical. An issue was discovered in phpMyAdmin. It is possible to bypass AllowRoot restriction ($cfg['Servers'][$i]['AllowRoot']) and deny rules for username by using Null Byte in the username. All 4.6.x versions (prior to 4.6.5), 4.4.x versions (prior to 4.4.15.9), and 4.0.x versions (prior to 4.0.10.18) are affected.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/11/2016 by Emanuel Bronshtein (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9849 since 12/06/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Upgrading to version 4.6.5, 4.4.15.9 or 4.0.10.18 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
