An issue was discovered in phpMyAdmin. Username matching for the allow/deny rules may result in wrong matches and detection of the username in the rule due to non-constant execution time. All 4.6.x versions (prior to 4.6.5), 4.4.x versions (prior to 4.4.15.9), and 4.0.x versions (prior to 4.0.10.18) are affected.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was presented 12/11/2016 by Emanuel Bronshtein (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-9850 since 12/06/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1211.

Upgrading to version 4.6.5, 4.4.15.9 or 4.0.10.18 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
