Details
A vulnerability has been found in Tatsuya Kinoshita w3m up to 0.5.3-30 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function renderTable. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in the Tatsuya Kinoshita w3m fork before 0.5.3-31. Integer overflow vulnerability in the renderTable function in w3m allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (OOM) and possibly execute arbitrary code due to bdwgc's bug (CVE-2016-9427) via a crafted HTML page.
The bug was discovered 11/18/2016. The weakness was shared 12/12/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9426 since 11/18/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 23 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96223 (FreeBSD : w3m -- multiple vulnerabilities (eafa3aec-211b-4dd4-9b8a-a664a3f0917a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196711 (Ubuntu Security Notification for W3m Vulnerabilities (USN-3214-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.5.3-31 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
