DirectShow in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted GIF file, aka "DirectShow Arbitrary Memory Overwrite Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2013 by Andrés Gómez Ramírez as ms13-jul as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-3174 since 04/17/2013. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Andrés Gómez Ramírez and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67213 (MS13-056: Vulnerability in Microsoft DirectShow Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2845187)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90897 (Microsoft Windows DirectShow Arbitrary Memory Overwrite Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-056)).
Applying the patch MS13-JUL is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13145.
