The Microsoft WMV video codec in wmv9vcm.dll, wmvdmod.dll in Windows Media Format Runtime 9 and 9.5, and wmvdecod.dll in Windows Media Format Runtime 11 and Windows Media Player 11 and 12 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted media file, aka "WMV Video Decoder Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 07/09/2013 as ms13-jul as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3127 since 04/17/2013. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67214 (MS13-057: Vulnerability in Windows Media Format Runtime Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2847883)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90893 (Microsoft Windows Media Format Runtime Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-057)).
Applying the patch MS13-JUL is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
