Details
A vulnerability was found in Foo Labs Xpdf up to 3.0 (Document Reader Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component PDF Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 10/21/2004 by Chris Evans with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at gentoo.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0888 since 09/22/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in XML. It is possible to download the exploit at gentoo.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15632 (RHEL 2.1 / 3 : xpdf (RHSA-2004:592)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117949 (CentOS Security Update for TeTeX (CESA-2005:354)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.foolabs.com.
