Linux Kernel up to 2.6.9 Terminal denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.9 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Terminal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple race conditions in the terminal layer in Linux 2.4.x, and 2.6.x before 2.6.9, allow (1) local users to obtain portions of kernel data via a TIOCSETD ioctl call to a terminal interface that is being accessed by another thread, or (2) remote attackers to cause a denial of service (panic) by switching from console to PPP line discipline, then quickly sending data that is received during the switch.

The weakness was shared 10/21/2004 by Alan Cox with Linux Kernel Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0814 since 08/25/2004. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16259 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2005:022)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117967 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:293)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17816), Tenable (16259), SecurityFocus (BID 11492†), OSVDB (11045†) and Secunia (SA12525†). securityfocus.com is providing further details. The entries VDB-947, VDB-945, VDB-946 and VDB-987 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
