Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.9 (Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component Terminal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple race conditions in the terminal layer in Linux 2.4.x, and 2.6.x before 2.6.9, allow (1) local users to obtain portions of kernel data via a TIOCSETD ioctl call to a terminal interface that is being accessed by another thread, or (2) remote attackers to cause a denial of service (panic) by switching from console to PPP line discipline, then quickly sending data that is received during the switch.
The weakness was published 10/22/2004 by Alan Cox with Linux Kernel Team (Website). The advisory is shared at kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0814 since 08/25/2004. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16259 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2005:022)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117967 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:293)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17816), Tenable (16259), SecurityFocus (BID 11492†), OSVDB (11044†) and Secunia (SA12525†). Similar entries are available at VDB-947, VDB-946, VDB-944 and VDB-987. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
