A vulnerability has been found in Apple macOS up to 10.12.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component curl. curl before version 7.51.0 uses outdated IDNA 2003 standard to handle International Domain Names and this may lead users to potentially and unknowingly issue network transfer requests to the wrong host.
The bug was discovered 09/14/2016. The weakness was presented 12/13/2016 by Christian Heimes as HT207423 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8625 since 10/12/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
Multiple issues existed in curl. These issues were addressed by updating to curl version 7.51.0.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 90 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95917 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157987 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for curl (ELSA-2019-4652)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
