QEMU NE2000 Device Emulation ioport out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function ioport of the component NE2000 Device Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) built with the NE2000 device emulation support is vulnerable to an OOB r/w access issue. It could occur while performing 'ioport' r/w operations. A privileged (CAP_SYS_RAWIO) user/process could use this flaw to leak or corrupt QEMU memory bytes.

The bug was discovered 01/04/2016. The weakness was shared 12/29/2016 by Ling Liu with Qihoo 360 (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8743 since 01/04/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 35 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88628 (Debian DSA-3469-1 : qemu - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168775 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:1154-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88628) and SecurityFocus (BID 79820†). The entries VDB-13216, VDB-13276, VDB-13279 and VDB-13280 are related to this item. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
