A vulnerability was found in SoftMaker FreeOffice 2010/2016. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the file freeoffice2016.exe of the component Installer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The weakness was released 12/29/2016 by Stefan Kanthak as Executable installers are vulnerable^WEVIL (case 42): SoftMaker's FreeOffice installer allows escalation of privilege as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. The installer creates an UNPROTECTED directory "%TEMP%\<GUID>\", writable by the unprivileged user, to extracts the files uinst.exe, SETUP_1.CAB and SETUP_2.CAB, then extracts an .MSI from the .CABs and calls "MSIEXEC.EXE /i ...MSI" to finally install FreeOffice.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 407 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
