Details
A vulnerability was found in SwiftMailer 5.4.5-DEV. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function mail. The manipulation of the argument -f with the input value "Attacker -Param2 -Param3"@test.com leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 12/29/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/28/2016 by Dawid Golunski as SwiftMailer <= 5.4.5-DEV Remote Code Execution (CVE-2016-10074) as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-10074 since 12/27/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202. The advisory points out:
An independent research uncovered a critical vulnerability in SwiftMailer that could potentially be used by (unauthenticated) remote attackers to achieve remote arbitrary code execution in the context of the web server user and remotely compromise the target web application. To exploit the vulnerability an attacker could target common website components such as contact/feedback forms, registration forms, password email resets and others that send out emails with the help of a vulnerable version of the SwiftMailer class.
A public exploit has been developed by Dawid Golunski in PHP and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96636 (Debian DLA-792-1 : libphp-swiftmailer security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370272 (SwiftMailer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability.).
Upgrading to version 5.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (40972), Tenable (96636) and SecurityFocus (BID 95140†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
