A vulnerability was found in WordPress (Content Management System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function media_handle_upload of the file wp-admin/includes/media.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the media_handle_upload function in wp-admin/includes/media.php in WordPress before 4.6.1 might allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML by tricking an administrator into uploading an image file that has a crafted filename.
The bug was discovered 09/07/2016. The weakness was shared 01/05/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-7168 since 09/08/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:wp-admin/includes/media.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93667 (Debian DLA-633-1 : wordpress security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13273 (WordPress Directory Traversal and Script Insertion Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.7.16, 3.8.16, 3.9.14, 4.0.13, 4.1.13, 4.2.10, 4.3.6, 4.4.5, 4.5.4 or 4.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
