Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GD Graphics Library up to 2.2.3 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function dynamicGetbuf of the file gd_io_dp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer signedness error in the dynamicGetbuf function in gd_io_dp.c in the GD Graphics Library (aka libgd) through 2.2.3, as used in PHP before 5.6.28 and 7.x before 7.0.13, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack-based buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted imagecreatefromstring call.
The bug was discovered 11/20/2016. The weakness was shared 01/04/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-8670 since 10/15/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
