Details
A vulnerability has been found in Tor up to 0.2.8.8/0.2.9.3 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file or/buffers.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Tor before 0.2.8.9 and 0.2.9.x before 0.2.9.4-alpha had internal functions that were entitled to expect that buf_t data had NUL termination, but the implementation of or/buffers.c did not ensure that NUL termination was present, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (client, hidden service, relay, or authority crash) via crafted data.
The bug was discovered 12/19/2016. The weakness was published 01/04/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-8860 since 10/19/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94483 (Fedora 23 : tor (2016-3b6393acdd)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276276 (Fedora Security Update for tor (FEDORA-2016-e56ed6f472)).
Upgrading to version 0.2.8.9 or 0.2.9.4-alpha eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
