MatrixSSL before 3.8.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted ASN.1 Bit Field primitive in an X.509 certificate.
The bug was discovered 10/11/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/05/2017 by Craig Young with Tripwire (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-6891 since 08/19/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 86 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38643 (MatrixSSL Prior to 3.8.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
