A vulnerability has been found in Pidgin (Messaging Software) (affected version not known) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component MXIT Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability exists in the handling of the MXIT protocol in Pidgin. Specially crafted MXIT data sent via the server could potentially result in a denial of service vulnerability. A malicious server can send a packet starting with a NULL byte triggering the vulnerability.
The bug was discovered 06/21/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/06/2017 by Yves Younan with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-2369 since 02/12/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91922 (Debian DLA-542-1 : pidgin security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
