A denial of service vulnerability exists in the handling of the MXIT protocol in Pidgin. Specially crafted MXIT data sent from the server could potentially result in an out-of-bounds read. A malicious server or man-in-the-middle attacker can send invalid data to trigger this vulnerability.
The bug was discovered 06/21/2016. The weakness was presented 01/06/2017 by Yves Younan with Cisco Talos (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-2370 since 02/12/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
