Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in CHICKEN Scheme 4.11. This affects the function process-execute/process-spawn. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The "process-execute" and "process-spawn" procedures in CHICKEN Scheme used fixed-size buffers for holding the arguments and environment variables to use in its execve() call. This would allow user-supplied argument/environment variable lists to trigger a buffer overrun. This affects all releases of CHICKEN up to and including 4.11 (it will be fixed in 4.12 and 5.0, which are not yet released).
The bug was discovered 01/10/2017. The weakness was released 01/10/2017 by Peter Bex (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.nongnu.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-6830 since 08/17/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
