A vulnerability has been found in PHP up to 7.0.11 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file ext/spl/spl_observer.c of the component Serialization. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The SplObjectStorage unserialize implementation in ext/spl/spl_observer.c in PHP before 7.0.12 does not verify that a key is an object, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (uninitialized memory access) via crafted serialized data.
The bug was discovered 12/27/2016. The weakness was published 01/11/2017 with Check Point (Website). The advisory is available at blog.checkpoint.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7480 since 09/09/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96806 (Amazon Linux AMI : php70 (ALAS-2017-788)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11755 (PHP Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 7.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
