Details
A vulnerability was found in HexChat 2.11.0 (Chat Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Server Name Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the client in HexChat 2.11.0 allows remote IRC servers to read or modify arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the server name.
The bug was discovered 04/05/2016. The weakness was presented 01/18/2017 by PizzaHatHacker as EDB-ID 39656 as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2087 since 01/27/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed by PizzaHatHacker and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 289 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (39656) and SecurityFocus (BID 95881†). See VDB-95469 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
