Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GStreamer (Multimedia Processing Software) (the affected version unknown). This issue affects an unknown part of the component vmnc Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the vmnc decoder in the gstreamer allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via large width and height values, which triggers a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 12/21/2016. The weakness was released 01/23/2017 by Chris Evans (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9445 since 11/18/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96066 (Oracle Linux 6 : gstreamer-plugins-bad-free (ELSA-2016-2974)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169639 (OpenSuSE Security Update for gstreamer-plugins-bad (openSUSE-SU-2017:0072-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96066) and SecurityFocus (BID 94421†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-95862 and VDB-95863. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
