The vmnc decoder in the gstreamer does not initialize the render canvas, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information as demonstrated by thumbnailing a simple 1 frame vmnc movie that does not draw to the allocated render canvas.
The bug was discovered 11/18/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/23/2017 by Chris Evans (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-9446 since 11/18/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
