Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Crypto++ 5.6.4. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component ASN.1 BER Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Crypto++ (aka cryptopp and libcrypto++) 5.6.4 contained a bug in its ASN.1 BER decoding routine. The library will allocate a memory block based on the length field of the ASN.1 object. If there is not enough content octets in the ASN.1 object, then the function will fail and the memory block will be zeroized even if its unused. There is a noticeable delay during the wipe for a large allocation.
The bug was discovered 12/12/2016. The weakness was released 01/30/2017 with Tresorit (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9939 since 12/12/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96105 (Debian DSA-3748-1 : libcrypto++ - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175924 (Debian Security Update for libcrypto++ (DSA 3748-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96105) and SecurityFocus (BID 94854†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-96307. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
