A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in mxml up to 2.7/2.9. This issue affects the function mxml_write_node of the file mxml-file.c of the component XML File Handler. The mxml_write_node function in mxml-file.c in mxml 2.9, 2.7, and possibly earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack consumption) via crafted xml file.
The bug was discovered 05/09/2016. The weakness was disclosed 02/03/2017 by Gustavo Grieco (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4571 since 05/09/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 270 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99015 (openSUSE Security Update : mxml (openSUSE-2017-380)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176717 (Debian Security Update for mxml (DLA 1641-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
