The mxml_write_node function in mxml-file.c in mxml 2.9, 2.7, and possibly earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack consumption) via crafted xml file.

The bug was discovered 05/09/2016. The weakness was disclosed 02/03/2017 by Gustavo Grieco (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4571 since 05/09/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 270 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99015 (openSUSE Security Update : mxml (openSUSE-2017-380)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
