Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.0 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function smbhash of the file fs/cifs/smbencrypt.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The smbhash function in fs/cifs/smbencrypt.c in the Linux kernel 4.9.x before 4.9.1 interacts incorrectly with the CONFIG_VMAP_STACK option, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash or memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging use of more than one virtual page for a scatterlist.
The bug was discovered 01/24/2017. The weakness was shared 02/06/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-10154 since 01/20/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276417 (Fedora Security Update for kernel (FEDORA-2017-6cc158c193)).
Upgrading to version 4.9.x eliminates this vulnerability.
