Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.6 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function vc4_get_bcl of the file drivers/gpu/drm/vc4/vc4_gem.c of the component VideoCore DRM Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a 7pk error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-388. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The vc4_get_bcl function in drivers/gpu/drm/vc4/vc4_gem.c in the VideoCore DRM driver in the Linux kernel before 4.9.7 does not set an errno value upon certain overflow detections, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (incorrect pointer dereference and OOPS) via inconsistent size values in a VC4_SUBMIT_CL ioctl call.
The bug was discovered 01/18/2017. The weakness was disclosed 02/06/2017 by Murray McAllister (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-5577 since 01/24/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97274 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2017-245)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276417 (Fedora Security Update for kernel (FEDORA-2017-6cc158c193)).
Upgrading to version 4.9.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97274) and SecurityFocus (BID 95765†). The entries VDB-95342, VDB-96553, VDB-96554 and VDB-96564 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
