A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.3 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c. arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c in the Linux kernel through 4.9.3 allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) via a crafted application that leverages instruction emulation for fxrstor, fxsave, sgdt, and sidt.
The bug was discovered 01/13/2017. The weakness was disclosed 01/15/2017 by Prasad J Pandit (Website). The advisory is available at spinics.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-2584 since 12/01/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97274 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2017-245)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169712 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2017:0464-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at spinics.net. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
