Linux Kernel up to 4.9.4 arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.4 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The load_segment_descriptor implementation in arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c in the Linux kernel before 4.9.5 improperly emulates a "MOV SS, NULL selector" instruction, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (guest OS crash) or gain guest OS privileges via a crafted application.

The bug was discovered 01/19/2017. The weakness was released 02/06/2017 with Huawei (Website). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-2583 since 12/01/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96708 (Fedora 25 : kernel (2017-e6012e74b6)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169712 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2017:0464-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.9.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (96708) and SecurityFocus (BID 95673†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-95342. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
