Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in FFmpeg up to 2.8.9/3.0.4/3.1.5/3.2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file libavformat/rtmppkt.c of the component RTMP Packet Size Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in libavformat/rtmppkt.c in FFmpeg before 2.8.10, 3.0.x before 3.0.5, 3.1.x before 3.1.6, and 3.2.x before 3.2.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging failure to check for RTMP packet size mismatches.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2017. The weakness was released 02/09/2017 by Paul (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-10191 since 02/01/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99722 (openSUSE Security Update : ffmpeg (openSUSE-2017-524)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176784 (Debian Security Update for libav (DLA 1611-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.8.10, 3.0.5, 3.1.6 or 3.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99722) and SecurityFocus (BID 95989†).
