A vulnerability has been found in libarchive 3.2.1 (File Compression Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function read_Header of the file archive_read_support_format_7zip.c of the component 7zip Archive Handler. The manipulation of the argument EmptyStream with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The read_Header function in archive_read_support_format_7zip.c in libarchive 3.2.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via multiple EmptyStream attributes in a header in a 7zip archive.
The bug was discovered 02/15/2017. The weakness was released 02/15/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8689 since 10/15/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
