A vulnerability was found in Jasper up to 1.900.4 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function bmp_getdata of the file libjasper/bmp/bmp_dec.c of the component imginfo. The manipulation as part of a BMP Image leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The bmp_getdata function in libjasper/bmp/bmp_dec.c in JasPer before 1.900.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via a crafted BMP image in an imginfo command.
The bug was discovered 02/15/2017. The weakness was disclosed 02/15/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-8690 since 10/15/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94601 (openSUSE Security Update : jasper (openSUSE-2016-1270)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176838 (Debian Security Update for jasper (DLA 1583-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.900.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
