A vulnerability was found in Jasper up to 1.900.8 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function bmp_getdata of the file libjasper/bmp/bmp_dec.c of the component imginfo. The manipulation as part of a BMP Image leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. The bmp_getdata function in libjasper/bmp/bmp_dec.c in JasPer before 1.900.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) by calling the imginfo command with a crafted BMP image.
The bug was discovered 03/23/2017. The weakness was published 03/23/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8885 since 10/22/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
