A vulnerability was found in Jasper 1.900.5 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function bmp_getdata of the file libjasper/bmp/bmp_dec.c of the component BMP Image Handler. The bmp_getdata function in libjasper/bmp/bmp_dec.c in JasPer 1.900.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) by calling the imginfo command with a crafted BMP image. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2016-8690.
The bug was discovered 03/23/2017. The weakness was presented 03/28/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-8884 since 10/22/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
