A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in MySQL DBD::mysql up to 4.38 (Database Software). This affects the function DBD::mysql. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The DBD::mysql module before 4.039 for Perl, when using server-side prepared statement support, allows attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via vectors involving an unaligned number of placeholders in WHERE condition and output fields in SELECT expression.
The bug was discovered 11/15/2016. The weakness was released 02/17/2017 by Pali Rohár (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-1249 since 12/27/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 93 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900036 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 4.039 eliminates this vulnerability.
