The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the Chorus2 2.4.2 add-on for Kodi allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a %2E%2E%252e (encoded dot dot slash) in the image path, as demonstrated by image/image%3A%2F%2F%2e%2e%252fetc%252fpasswd.

The bug was discovered 02/12/2017. The weakness was released 02/14/2017 by Eric Flokstra as [Kodi v17.1] - Local File Inclusion as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-5982 since 02/13/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely.
