A vulnerability was found in Simplessus 3.7.7. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument path with the input value ..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2f..%2fetc%2fpasswd leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was presented 02/16/2017 by Dr. Adrian Vollmer as [SYSS-2017-004] Simplessus Files: Path Traversal as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-20105. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
