Details
A vulnerability was found in VIM up to 8.0 (Word Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function unserialize_uep. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An integer overflow at an unserialize_uep memory allocation site would occur for vim before patch 8.0.0378, if it does not properly validate values for tree length when reading a corrupted undo file, which may lead to resultant buffer overflows.
The bug was discovered 03/03/2017. The weakness was published 02/27/2017 by Hao Sun (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-6350 since 02/26/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
