A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick 6.x/7.x (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ReadHDRImage of the file coders/hdr.c of the component HDR File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The ReadHDRImage function in coders/hdr.c in ImageMagick 6.x and 7.x allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted HDR file.
The bug was discovered 06/06/2016. The weakness was released 02/27/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8900 since 06/05/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168988 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2016:1784-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
