A vulnerability has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version unknown) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function virtio_gpu_set_scanout of the component Virtio GPU Device Emulator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The virtio_gpu_set_scanout function in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) built with Virtio GPU Device emulator support allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and process crash) via a scanout id in a VIRTIO_GPU_CMD_SET_SCANOUT command larger than num_scanouts.
The bug was discovered 12/23/2016. The weakness was released 02/27/2017 with 360.cn Inc. (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-10029 since 12/22/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95018 (GLSA-201611-11 : QEMU: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196757 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu Vulnerabilities (USN-3261-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu-project.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
