An issue was discovered in Veritas NetBackup Before 7.7 and NetBackup Appliance Before 2.7. There are world-writable log files, allowing destruction or spoofing of log data.
The bug was discovered 03/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/01/2017 by Sven Blumenstein, Xiaoran Wang and Andrew Griffiths with Google as Veritas NetBackup v6.x, v7.x, v8.0 and NetBackup appliances v2.x, v3.0 - Multiple Critical Vulnerabilities as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-6404 since 03/01/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
Multiple critical vulnerabilities were identified in Veritas NetBackup and NetBackup appliance. The vulnerabilities were discovered during a black box security assessment and therefore the vulnerability list should not be considered exhaustive.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 92 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104888 (Veritas NetBackup Appliance < 2.7.2 / 3.1.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities (VTS17-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370336 (Veritas NetBackup Multiple Vulnerabilities.(VTS17-003)).
Upgrading to version 8.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:
