A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in ZZIPlib 0.13.62. This affects the function zzip_mem_entry_extra_block of the file memdisk.c of the component ZIP Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Heap-based buffer overflow in the zzip_mem_entry_extra_block function in memdisk.c in zziplib 0.13.62 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted ZIP file.
The bug was discovered 03/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/01/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-5976 since 02/13/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
