Details
A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.3 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function CalcMinMax of the file coders/mat.c of the component MAT File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the CalcMinMax function in coders/mat.c in ImageMagick before 6.9.4-0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted mat file.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2016. The weakness was published 03/03/2017 by Bastien Roucaries (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-10070 since 12/26/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
