This vulnerability affects the function renderTracks of the file wp-includes/media.php of the component Media File Metadata Handler. In WordPress before 4.7.3, there is authenticated Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) via Media File Metadata. This is demonstrated by both (1) mishandling of the playlist shortcode in the wp_playlist_shortcode function in wp-includes/media.php and (2) mishandling of meta information in the renderTracks function in wp-includes/js/mediaelement/wp-playlist.js.

The bug was discovered 03/07/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/12/2017 by Yorick Koster (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-6814 since 03/11/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:wp-includes/media.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. Upgrading to version 3.7.19, 3.8.19, 3.9.17, 4.0.16, 4.1.16, 4.2.13, 4.3.9, 4.4.8, 4.5.7, 4.6.4 or 4.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
