A vulnerability was found in WordPress (Content Management System) and classified as critical. In WordPress before 4.7.3 (wp-includes/pluggable.php), control characters can trick redirect URL validation.
The bug was discovered 03/07/2017. The weakness was presented 03/12/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-6815 since 03/11/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:wp-includes/pluggable.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175994 (Debian Security Update for wordpress (DSA 3815-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.7.19, 3.8.19, 3.9.17, 4.0.16, 4.1.16, 4.2.13, 4.3.9, 4.4.8, 4.5.7, 4.6.4 or 4.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
