A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows up to Server 2016 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component HelpPane. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. The bug was discovered 03/14/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/14/2017 by James Forshaw with Google Security Research as MS17-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-0100 since 09/09/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After 1 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97743 (MS17-012: Security Update for Microsoft Windows (4013078)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370297 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Windows (MS17-012)).
Applying the patch MS17-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
