A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in libevent up to 2.1.5. Affected is the function search_make_new of the file evdns.c. The manipulation of the argument hostname with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The search_make_new function in evdns.c in libevent before 2.1.6-beta allows attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via an empty hostname.
The bug was discovered 01/31/2017. The weakness was published 03/15/2017 by Guido Vranken (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-10197 since 02/01/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
