Memory leak in the virgl_resource_attach_backing function in hw/display/virtio-gpu-3d.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host memory consumption) via a large number of VIRTIO_GPU_CMD_RESOURCE_ATTACH_BACKING commands.
The bug was discovered 03/15/2017. The weakness was released 03/15/2017 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-5552 since 01/20/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97271 (GLSA-201702-28 : QEMU: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196764 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu Vulnerabilities (USN-3268-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
