Memory leak in the serial_exit_core function in hw/char/serial.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local guest OS privileged users to cause a denial of service (host memory consumption and QEMU process crash) via a large number of device unplug operations.

The bug was discovered 01/23/2017. The weakness was presented 03/15/2017 by Prasad J Pandit (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-5579 since 01/25/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 29 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97271 (GLSA-201702-28 : QEMU: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169803 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2017:0647-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu-project.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
