A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (affected version not known). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function ohci_service_ed_list of the file hw/usb/hcd-ohci.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The ohci_service_ed_list function in hw/usb/hcd-ohci.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via vectors involving the number of link endpoint list descriptors.
The bug was discovered 03/06/2017. The weakness was published 03/15/2017 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-6505 since 03/06/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97804 (Fedora 25 : 2:qemu (2017-31b976672b)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169868 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2017:1081-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu-project.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
